Phuket Hotels Association was formed in January 2016 and has since reached 65 hotel members as of December 2017 and growing.
Led by Trisara Hotel Managing Director and General Manager, Anthony Lark in the role of President, the association now represents a membership profile of many of the island’s leading internationally branded and independent luxury and mid-scale hotels for a total of just over 10,400 rooms.
All of the hotel members has a strong commitment to the destination and through Phuket Hotels Association are active in investing in its future through key long-term environmental and educational programmes, which will provide the foundations for ongoing development and sustainable success.
Bill Barnett, Phuket-based hospitality expert, who is the Managing Director of consulting firm C9 Hotelworks is one of the founding members of the Phuket Hotels Association.
A long-time advocate of the destination, publishing regular hotel and tourism data on the market and has long believed that the island’s hospitality sector needed to continue to not only take out, but also promote a sustainable path of long-term success. Mr Barnett with key tourism figures such as former Laguna Phuket Managing Director Michael Ayling has contributed time to help set-up the organisation. At the forefront of creating and enhancing Phuket’s image and messaging towards a sustainable path and focus of quality versus quantity tourism is QUO’s David Keen, who is acting as a the group’s Strategic Advisor, together with Mark Simmons, who heads up Outrigger Asia Pacific’s regional sales and marketing.
The Brand Phuket initiative was officially launched on 23 January 2017 at the Thailand Tourism Forum held at InterContinental Bangkok by Founder and Thailand hotel veteran Wichit Na Ranong, who was accompanied by Trisara Managing Director & General Manager and Phuket Hotels Association’s President Anthony Lark and Outrigger Resorts Vice President, Sales & Marketing Asia Pacific and Head of Marketing for Phuket Hotels Association Mark Simmons and QUO’s CEO David Keen.
ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING GROUP
WHAT WE AIM TO DO: Help hotels conduct business in a sustainable manner with minimal impact on Phuket environment whilst saving costs at the same time. We want to educate hotel teams on how to care for this amazing island and preserve its natural charms.
EDUCATION WORKING GROUP
WHAT WE AIM TO DO: Continue to help local Phuket community in fostering vocational education by offering scholarships through fundraising efforts and hotel management training through member hotels.
The hotel association its first fundraising activity at a gala event in Phuket on 13 May 2017 which raised just over 4 million baht to help fund hospitality-focused educational scholarship programme.
The hotel association launched its first island-wide Beach Clean Up activity in Phuket on 16 September 2017 in collaboration with the Phuket Government and Provincial departments. The campaign is called ภูเก็ตสวยด้ วยมือและใจเรา Hearts with Hands, Keep Phuket Clean.
PHUKET HOTELS ASSOCIATIONS CORE OBJECTIVES
• To promote positive stories about the experiences, natural beauty and people of Phuket, offering support to local government and the tourism authorities in promoting the destination.
• To support underprivileged local children with scholarships in hotel management at Phuket’s universities and colleges.
• To share information with member hoteliers relating to environmentally responsible best practices, recycling centers, and green suppliers.
