ICONSIAM in collaboration with Khlong San District Office, and Thon Buri District Office has enjoyed support from a number of organizations in the Kadeejeen-Khlong San neighborhoods which are the Cultural Council of Khlong San District, the Cultural Council of Thon Buri District, the Princess Mother Memorial Park, Khlong San Police Station, Somdet Chao Phraya Police Station, and Somdet Chaopraya Institute of Psychiatry, launched the “ICONSIAM Young Ambassadors” activity to select youth representatives to publicize “The Pride of Thailand” with emphasis on sharing precious stories of the Kadeejeen – Khlong San neighborhoods and passing on the Siam pride to the youth to encourage them to preserve the district’s invaluable culture and cultivate in them a sense of pride and protectiveness of their historic community.

In his remark on ICONSIAM Young Ambassadors, Mr. Supoj Chaiwatsirikul, Managing Director of ICONSIAM Co., Ltd said, “Our threefold social mission towards Thailand includes conserving natural resources and the environment of the Chao Phraya River and its the vicinity, contributing to the sustainable development of the communities and their unique local wisdom, and preserving the precious culture and traditions of the people living along the Chao Phraya River generation after generation. Recently, ICONSIAM has made its contribution to the launching and operation of “The Pride of Thailand” project, an unprecedented project that encourages all Thais to share and submit stories of their local pride to be recorded in a digital archive that collects uplifting stories and treasures of Thailand to demonstrate that Thailand is in no way inferior to any nation. As a member of the business sector who is becoming part of the Kadeejeen – Khlong San neighborhoods, ICONSIAM hopes to encourage the local residents to be proud to be members of their communities. Therefore, the ICONSIAM Young Ambassador activity is an extension of The Pride of Thailand that will amplify the small yet powerful voice of the local youth in the Kadeejeen – Khlong San neighborhoods, who will represent their districts and share their stories with the general public as well as carry on the districts’ unique traditions.”

The target youth group eligible to participate in the ICONSIAM Young Ambassador Project was primary school students in grades 4-6 in Kadeejeen – Khlong San. In addition, contests were also held, comprising 1) Kadeejeen – Khlong San public relations campaign contests (the school category) and 2) the ICONSIAM Young Ambassador contest (the individual category). The activity included an educational camp and a field trip that educated the participating students the Chao Phraya River, the history of the area, as well as landmarks and significant sites in Kadeejeen – Khlong San such as Pong Patchamit Fort, the traditional salt factories, and the antique houses of Chinese deans. The participating students were also taught by experienced guest speakers namely Aporn Kulwattho, the Chair of the Cultural Council of Khlong San District, Theeranan Chuangpichit, a history scholar, and Panyaphat Lertsamranrerngrom, an expert on the Kadeejeen – Khlong San neighborhoods. The year-round duty of the ICONSIAM Young Ambassadors is to share precious stories of their districts with the general public and drive activities for society and the environment as well as participate in the districts’ river and canal restoration projects. The ICONSIAM Young Ambassadors will hold office for one year before another contest is held to select the successors to carry on their aspiration to contribute to their community, culture, and environment.

“ICONSIAM Young Ambassadors will represent the youth of the Kadeejeen – Khlong San neighborhoods to convey their love and pride in their local districts to promote appreciation of the neighborhoods and conservation efforts of the Chao Phraya River as Kadeejeen – Khlong San are historic neighborhoods with a long cultural history by the Chao Phraya River, one of Thailand’s major rivers. The activity sets out to encourage the local youths to learn more about the treasures in their districts to create a group of youths with expertise in telling the stories and relaying the pride of the Kadeejeen – Khlong San neighborhoods to the nation and, in future phases, to the world.” Supoj said.

For this year, there were altogether four winners in the first category (the school category), namely Wat Suwan School for “The Princess Mother Memorial Park Tour with ICONSIAM Young Ambassadors,” Wat Prayun Wongsawat School for “Khlongsan – Chao Phraya Conservation Efforts for all Thais,” Wat Thong Pleng School for “A Tour through Khlong San’s Four Golden Temples,” and Wat Pichaiyat School for “The Three Kingdoms Bas-relief Sculpture: Pichaiyat’s Treasure.” As for the individual category of the ICONSIAM Young Ambassador, the two winners were Suphisara Pheungphutikant aged 10 years old, grade 4 from Wat Thong Pleng School in the girls’ category and Thanakrit Boonyaworakul aged 10 years old, grade 5 from Santa Cruz Suksa School in the boys’ category.

Suphisara Pheungphutikant from Wat Thong Pleng and Thanakrit Boonyaworakul from Santa Cruz Suksa School, the winners of the ICONSIAM Young Ambassadors Contest, spoke of their impression of the project. “We are representatives of the schools in the Kadeejeen – Khlong San neighborhoods, and we are glad to have participated in ICONSIAM Young Ambassador Contest and selected as the first Young Ambassadors of the project. We will fulfill our duties to the best of our ability and represent Kadeejeen – Khlong San to share precious stories of our home district. We hope that what we do will inspire our fellow youths in other communities to treasure and be proud of their communities like us,” said the two ICONSIAM Young Ambassadors.
