Phuket Airport has opened a new passenger terminal to double passenger capacity in the Thai resort island.
The new four-storey terminal facility will double the capacity of Phuket airport from 6.5 million passengers annually to 12.5 million. It will also benefit neighbouring provinces – but illegal taxi operators had better beware.
During the official opening ceremony of Friday, Thailand’s Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha mentioned that he would eliminate illegally operated taxis from Phuket Airport and other airports across Thailand, the Bangkok Post reported.
Prayut admitted it could not be achieved overnight, but said: “All mafia have to go, under this government.”
The drive to eliminate them would extend to all airports, he added.
Illegal taxis are common at major Thai airports. Many are reputed to be run by influential figures or corrupt officials, operating behind the scenes.
