H.S.H. Peesadech Ratchanee, President of Royal Project Foundation, said about the Royal Project 48 event: “The late King started the Royal Project in 1969, aiming to develop agriculture on the highlands to reduce the problems of shifting cultivation, forest demolition and the growing of narcotic plants among the hill tribes in addition to preserving the forests, which are a major source of water in the country, and to further develop the quality of life for hill tribes. Over the years, the Royal Projects have studied cold weather crop plantation in order to support farmers in the highlands and help generate income in the replacement of opium, and they have been very successful. Therefore, the Royal Project Foundation holds a Royal Project event every year to show the progress of our research and development and to distribute crops and products from the Royal Project Foundation, the late King’s personal projects and other supporting units partnering with the Royal Project Foundation.”
The highlighted products for this year are crops and products available for the first time in this Royal Project 48 event i.e. two rare local rice varieties grown in the highland community, the home of various rice varieties. The rice the local people consume has been selected and passed down from generation to generation and its purity has been maintained to the present day. The two rare rice varieties are Pakakayo and Lawa Yellow Rice or ‘Bue Bo Rice’ and Pakakayo Kai Pa Rice or ‘Bue Cho Mee Rice’. Bue Bo Rice has a short and slender grain with dark hay-like colour husks. The rice is fragrant and very soft after being cooked. It contains Gamma Oryzanol and helps to reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease with its antioxidants. It also helps to reduce bad cholesterol (LDL-C) and blood sugar. Rich in potassium, it helps to control the water balance in the body and to lower blood pressure. It also contains iron, which helps to generate red blood cells preventing anemia. The zinc content is high in this rice, which is an important nutrient for the children’s growth. Bue Cho Mee Rice can be grown once a year and its grains are long and slender similar to those of Jasmine Rice. It contains antioxidants and helps to strengthen body functions, and it also prevents premature ageing. It contains potassium, which will work together with sodium in order to balance water in the body. Bue Cho Mee Rice helps to normalize the heartbeat and is rich in vitamin B1, which helps nourish the nerves and relieve the symptoms of beriberi disease.
The Royal Project’s Smoked Sturgeon: In 2007, Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, Regent of the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej, gave 200,000 baht in funding to purchase 1 kilogram of fish eggs from Russia. The Department of Fisheries hatched the roe at the hatchery on Doi Inthanon and those eggs turned into 9,000 fry. The fish were nursed in various locations and in 2008, the Royal Project Foundation studied the efficiency of sturgeon roe production under the topic ‘The effect of food on the development of sturgeon’s eggs at Doi Inthanon’ and has continued with sturgeon farming ever since. The Royal Project’s smoked sturgeon has a fine aroma with a gold-colored flesh and tastes delicious. It is rich in protein, omega-3, collagen and antioxidants. Popular dishes are such as salad, smoked sturgeon wrapped in vegetables or simply heat and eat instantly.
Rainbow Trout: Freshwater fish that live in the natural streams of North America. The Inthanon Highland Fisheries Research Unit is currently able to breed and nurse the fish. Rainbow trout reach their reproductive age at 2 years old and spawn once a year from December to January. The trout grow to a market size of 300 grams in 8-10 months. Rainbow trout taste delicious, contain a high level of unsaturated fatty acids and are high in omega-3. They can help reduce the amount of cholesterol and reduce the free iron in the blood.
Figs: One of the popular and healthy fruits. Fig features bell or pear shape with succulent, juicy and sweet flesh inside. Fresh, as well as dried figs, contain healthy levels of high in fiber and carbohydrate, high calcium and is rich in natural vitamin A. Figs are great and ideal for people with Hypertension, Dyslipidemia and liver disease as they are without fat, cholesterol and sodium.
In addition, we also have The Royal Project branded products such as Ganoderma Lucidum with rice bran oil capsule supplements and coffee with red Ganoderma Lucidum made from The Royal Project’s premium Arabica coffee, which is meticulously roasted and ground, giving a soft pleasant taste and a beautiful fragrant seamless blend with the Royal Project’s Red Ganoderma Lucidum. (Coffee is available both in the form of roasted coffee beans and roasted and ground coffee.) Coffee with Red Ganoderma Lucidum offers a delicious high quality. White tea is derived from the leaf tips of Assam tea, which is most suitable for making white tea and gives the tea a light golden color, and a soft natural, mellow, natural taste. Assam tea grows in the forest area of Huai Nam Khun village, Tha Ko sub-district, Mae Saruay district in Chiang Rai province, which is the location of the Huai Nam Khun Royal Project Development Center. Last year, The Royal Project’s white tea received the Silver Medal at the World Tea Union 2016, organized by the World Green Tea Association in Shizuoka, Japan. Buckwheat is gluten free and is a popular choice for people who prefer healthy food. It is suitable for people who are allergic to gluten.
