Global COVID-19 death toll, cases soar

The global death toll and new cases of viral infection have continued to soar. For Thailand however, any increase in numbers is still from returnees who have to stay at a state quarantine center where testing takes place.

Dr Taweesin Visanuyothin, spokesman for the Center for COVID-19 Situation Administration, said today three more COVID-19 patients had been identified: two men from Singapore and one man from Sudan. The current cumulative cases figure is now 3,249. The total number of recovered patients is now 3,096, while fatalities remain at 58.

There are now 14.5 million cumulative cases of COVID-19 worldwide, with the United States having the highest total number of cases at more than 3.8 million, followed by Brazil with 2.07 million cases and India with more than 1.07 million cases of the viral infection.

The World Health Organization (WHO) reported on Saturday a record-breaking number of new cases numbering 259,848 persons within 24 hours, up from 237,743 on Friday.

The global death toll has now reached more than 600,000, while over 8.6 million persons have recovered from the disease. The United States has the highest COVID-19 death toll at more than 142,000 persons, Brazil has recorded more than 78,000 deaths, and the United Kingdom 45,000.
