Panthera Group Co-founders distribute 1,000 high-quality helmets to students in Thailand

Panthera Group co-founders, Mr. Michael T. Doherty and Mr. Paul Hayward, joined students at Chumchon Mooban Pattana School in Klong Toey District, Bangkok, to donate a total of 1,000 high-quality helmets. The event marks the first helmet distribution by Panthera Group through the Helmets for Kids program, which aims to increase helmet use among children, teachers, and parents to reduce their risk of head injury.

At the helmet handover ceremony, 500 helmets were distributed to 120 students at Mooban Pattana School, 115 students at Wat Saphan School, 80 students at Wat Klongtei and 185 students at Sun Ruam Namchai School.  Another 500 helmets were sent to 6 schools in Phuket. During the ceremony, students actively engaged in activities and learned to properly use helmets by watching their fellow students’ performances and onstage helmet demonstrations. The students also participated in various  games and activities, through which they learned about the importance of safe road behavior and about the dangers of failing to wear a helmet.

A grade 3 teacher in attendance at the handover ceremony noted, “Panthera Group has generously supported our school’s efforts to protect and support one of the most vulnerable populations within our community — our students and our children.” The school representative noted, “We are very excited for this first major step in this partnership with Panthera Group Thailand and are grateful for the positive impact they have brought to the district and our school.”

As of 2018, Thailand had the 9th highest road traffic fatality rate in the world, with an estimate of over 24,000 deaths per year or 66 deaths per day, and 1,035,044 injuries. Youth are particularly affected by the perilous situation on Thailand’s roads, due to low helmet-wearing rates, which consistently put them at risk of a road crash fatality or injury. Through its partnership with Panthera Group and Helmets for Kids programming, AIP Foundation will work in target schools and communities to promote safer road behavior and helmet use among students, parents, teachers, and community members

“The Helmets for Kids program ensures that communities in need have access to quality helmets and life-saving road safety education,” said Mr. Michael T. Doherty. Panthera Group has donated 1,000 helmets today because we recognize the importance of saving every single young life. The number of road fatalities in Thailand is truly inexcusable, at some of the highest rates in the world. We feel that we need to step up and help protect children’s lives.”
