The foliage-filled Urban Oasis was transformed to welcome more than 800 chilli enthusiasts with a line that stretched to the hotel lobby waiting for the doors to open. Anticipation was running high for the sizzle fest and dopamine levels reach new heights as foodies tackled the heat of beloved street food favourites from the spiciest parts of the world including Mexico, India, China, Chile, Indonesia and, of course, Thailand.

Chilli connoisseurs tackled the heat with delicious dishes from all the handpicked restaurants with crowd favourites like fiery ‘Tiger Prawn Madras Curry with Dried Shrimp Pulao’ from Haoma, ‘Mango Burnt Chilli Shaved Ice’ from Coda and ‘Gung Pad Prik Ki Nu Suan’ from Saneh Jaan.

Chilli-festers stayed hydrated courtesy of the chilli-themed beverage drinks by Diageo Thailand, Alchemy Thailand and Full Moon Brewworks, with handcrafted tipples including ‘Ms. Paloma’, ‘Scotch el Diablo’, ‘Speyside Horchata’, ‘Scorching Margaret’ and Full Moon Bussaba Ex-Weisse to name a few.

Guests entered chilli heaven by exploring the “Hot House” – a greenhouse built specially to propagate different variations of chillis that spice up the hotel’s kitchens. The 12 fiery variations include Habanero Peppers, Aji Pineapple Chilli, Cherry Bomb Chilli, Sugar Rush Peach, Black Hungarian, Komodo Dragon and so much more! The Hot House is located in Urban Oasis and open to everyone. All chilli fanatics are welcomed to explore these chillis.

In the ultimate expression of chilli love, over 150 hot heads walked away with new chilli tattoos by California Ink Bangkok, and the boldest went for hot red emblems. Definitely a reminder of the fiery Chilli Fest that will last them a lifetime.

Later on the day, 14 bravest participants joined the chilli-eating competition to vie for the grand cash prize of THB 10,000. They went head-to-head, culminating in the ultimate challenge: whoever could consume the most Naga Bhuts (or Ghost Peppers) at one million Scoville Heat Units in 60 seconds.

Chilli Fest is set to be an annual event and Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok promises to bring the new culinary experiences to town. Stay tuned for Thailand’s ultimate chilli extravaganza, the Chilli Fest in 2024.
