The festival of lights “Awakening Bangkok 2020”

Awakening Bangkok is back to illuminate iconic attractions in Charoenkrung – Bangrak – Talad Noi, including Prince Rama Theatre, The Grand Postal Building, and So Heng Tai Mansion, with state-of-art lighting installations crafted by famous visual artists and designers. Being held under the theme RE/WIND/FAST/FORWARD, the 2020 edition of Awakening Bangkok encourages visitors to look back at a time during the COVID-19 crisis, contemplate on how to transcend the challenges and move forward. Awakening Bangkok 2020 is organised by Time Out Bangkok and supported by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (Public Organization) (TCEB), the Creative Economy Agency (Public Organization) (CEA), and Diageo Moet Hennessy (Thailand) Co., Ltd, together with Peppermint Field, Prudential, and BGC.

Visitors will find 40 artworks and lighting installations by 25 designers and artists. Discover highlights at key landmarks, including The Grand Postal Building, Warehouse 30, and Prince Rama Theatre, where JOHNNIE WALKER presents THE GATEWAY, JOURNIE, and TAKE A WALK – three creative artworks from DON BOY and YIMSAMER which tell stories on history and roles of the world-famous Scotch whisky brand throughout the past two centuries in social-cultural context. BGC Glass Studio presents ARTEMIS, HOW MUCH TIME DO YOU NEED?, LIGHT UP THE CITY and SOCIAL DISTANCING 2020 – lighting installations made of glass with creative techniques that show relations of light, sound, darkness, and feelings of insecure situations. Other highlights include “AUTORORA” by Autosave Studio – a group of students from King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang, which showcases artwork inspired by warriors in a Norse legend and northern lights; “CENSORSHIT” by H-LAB – an interactive art that reflects on censorship and unspeakable situation of which emojis are used as codes to express what’s in the mind of speakers.

Besides, visitors will enjoy a series of colourful activities such as “Silent Disco”, craft fair, foods and drinks from renowned restaurants, and mini-concerts by artists from What the Duck Record Label.

At the festival, Johnnie Walker showcases “KEEP WALKING” campaign to celebrate the brand’s 200th Anniversary. The activity showcases innovative products from three partners: TKW, a streetwear brand by TAKARA WONG, that introduces a unique collection ‘Walk Forward’ created for the next generation who chooses to express oneself through designs; Guss Damn Good, a Thai ice cream brand, that tells stories of Johnnie Walker through a new ice cream flavour so-called Keep Walking – crafted with ingredients beyond traditional ice cream recipes; and Vesper Cocktail Bar, a no. 62 spot on World’s 50 Best Bars 2020, introduces new mixed drinks in a can designed to encourage the next generation to create their cocktail recipes in any occasion. Also, there is a documentary film screening, The Man Who Walked Around the World, premiered for the first time in Thailand at the Prince Rama Theatre.

Savour the nights with creative lighting installations at Awakening Bangkok 2020 between December 11-20, 2020 in Charoenkrung-Bangrak – Talad Noi.
