Skål Chiang Mai welcomed ASEAN Tourism Forum delegates to their monthly meeting held at Le Crystal French Restaurant on January 25, 2018. President Tim McGuire was on hand to welcome visitors from Bangkok and Krabi as well as Chiang Mai members and guests.
New Skål Krabi president Wolfgang Grimm of Aonang Cliff Beach Hotel was joined by fellow Krabi member Ulrich Bieber and Skål Bangkok President Eric Hallin of Rembrandt Hotel was joined by fellow Bangkok member Nicklas Moberg of Hotel Royal Bangkok who just recently hosted the Skål Bangkok meeting.
The evening started with cocktails and canapes on the lawn outside where everyone enjoyed the peaceful ambiance riverside. The weather was perfect and the gorgeous backdrop set the tone for a fabulous evening with everyone enjoying the lovely setting.
Everyone then retired to dinner where President Tim McGuire announced that there was a prize for guests and to check under their bread plates where there was a voucher from K-Phone.
New Le Meridien General Manager Rajat Chatterjee was introduced as was the new Skål Krabi President Wolfgang Grimm as well as Uli Bieber, Skål councilor Brinley Waddell, Skål Bangkok President Eric Hallin, manager of Le Crystal Riddhi Diskul, Scott Monett of Arizona Joes and visitors Julie and Marty, Isabel, and Ron. Annette announced the visit to Mae Mha Orphanage held on Sunday, January 28 and asked for volunteers to assist Treasurer Gill Dobson in shopping at Makro on Saturday. Tim took the microphone to tell everyone a bit about the orphanage, there are currently 86 students with many of them undocumented. When he first started visiting the orphanage 8 years ago they subsisted on cabbage and broken rice. Now Skål Chiang Mai helps provide the basic necessities including rice, meat, canned goods, and school supplies.
Media Director Shana Kongmun informed the crowd that the Chiang Mai International Rotary Club is participating in the Thailand International Balloon Festival this year, to be held on March 2, 3, and 4. On March 3 the club will be holding a Golf Ball Drop- you can purchase a ticket for 1,000 baht and this will give you one golf ball, the golf balls will be dropped out of a hot air balloon and the one closest to the hole wins 30,000 baht in cash, and you do not need to be present to win. There are a limited number of tickets being sold and the purchasers will also get one free entry into the festival. Contact firstname.lastname@example.org for details.
Vice President Annette Kunigagon announced the upcoming TEDx Chiang Mai event to be held at Le Meridien Chiang Mai on February 10, there are many great speakers and events going on during the day. There are 100 volunteers and asked if anyone was interested in volunteering to let her know. She reminded everyone that TEDx Chiang Mai is the first TEDx in Thailand and has a wide variety of international and Thai speakers – all speaking in English. She thanked Le Meridien Chiang Mai and Rajat for their help, as well as TEDx organizer and Skål member Martin Venzky-Stalling and Chiang Mai Rock Climbing Adventures for their support. After announcements President Tim asked Skål Bangkok President Eric Hallin to give the Skål toast in English and Vice President Annette to give the toast in Thai, everyone rose to join them in the toast. Then the group sat down to a delicious meal with excellent service and great fellowship. The visitors were greatly impressed with the venue and vowed to visit again.
After dinner Julie Farrow won the lucky draw for a voucher to Arizona Joe’s, the American restaurant in Kad Farang in Hang Dong, and President Tim then held a quick auction for two nights stay at Movenpick Chiang Mai, Gill Dobson bid generously to help the kids at Mae Mha and took home the voucher.
