Unlocking Travel Safety: Expert Tips to Outsmart Pickpockets

Global Rescue - logoTraveling the world offers incredible experiences, but it also comes with risks. Tourists are often prime targets for scammers, pickpockets, and thieves. To help travellers stay safe, experts have shared their top tips for protecting money, credit cards, and passports while exploring new destinations. The Summer 2024 Global Rescue Traveller Sentiment and Safety Survey reveals practical strategies from seasoned travellers to keep your valuables secure.

The Importance of Splitting Valuables

One of the most effective methods to avoid total loss due to theft is to split your valuables. According to the survey, this technique is highly recommended by experienced travellers. “Separating and securing your valuables ensures that if a thief nabs a shoulder bag or a pickpocket steals your wallet, you still have access to some of your money, credit cards, and duplicates of other important documents,” says Harding Bush, Associate Director of Security Operations at Global Rescue, the leading provider of medical, security, evacuation, and travel risk management services.

Gender Differences in Travel Safety Tactics

The survey highlighted notable differences in how male and female travellers protect their valuables. While 26% of male travellers favour splitting their valuables, slightly more female respondents (30%) use the same method. However, it is not the top choice for women.

Women prefer using crossbody purses or bags to safeguard their belongings. Nearly a third (31%) of female travellers identified this as their primary method for preventing theft. In contrast, only 5% of men use crossbody bags.

Additional Safety Measures

Men also tend to use zippered pockets as a secondary defence mechanism, with 22% of male respondents opting for this approach. “Travelers wearing clothing with zippered pockets or pockets on the inside, like a vest or a sport coat, make it difficult to snatch a wallet,” Bush explains.

Interestingly, the survey reveals that more than twice the percentage of men do not use any method to protect their valuables compared to women. One out of four male respondents (25%) admitted they don’t take any specific measures, whereas less than 10% of women do the same.

Alternative Methods to Safeguard Valuables

The world’s most experienced travellers also recommend various other methods to protect their valuables. These include:

  • Money Belts (10%): Worn under clothing, these belts provide discreet storage for cash and documents.
  • Travel Wallets (5%): Specially designed wallets that can be concealed under clothing.
  • Fanny Packs or Waist Packs (3%): Convenient and secure, especially when worn in front.
  • Backpack Locks (2%): Adding a lock to your backpack can deter thieves.
  • Undercover Leg or Wrist Wallets (1%): These innovative wallets are hidden on your body, making them hard to detect.
  • Dummy Wallets (<1%): A decoy wallet can trick thieves into taking the wrong item.

Surprisingly, no respondents reported using shoes with hidden compartments, indicating that this method might be less practical or effective.
