SHR Champions Plastic-Free July with Eco Initiatives

Junior marineAs the global movement toward sustainability intensifies, S Hotels and Resorts Public Company Limited (SHR), a subsidiary of Singha Estate Public Company Limited (S), is pioneering efforts to reduce plastic waste and promote environmental responsibility. In alignment with the Plastic-Free July initiative, SHR has unveiled a series of innovative guest experiences and sustainability practices designed to inspire and engage travelers in eco-conscious activities.

Transformative Eco-Initiatives in Thailand

In Thailand, SHR’s properties are setting new standards in eco-friendly hospitality. At Santiburi Koh Samui, the Upcycling Project repurposes old curtains and cushion cases into complimentary bags for guests. This creative initiative not only diminishes waste but also provides a stylish alternative to plastic bags, encouraging guests to embrace sustainable practices during their stay.

SAii Phi Phi Island Village takes environmental action a step further with its weekly beach clean-ups. Guests join marine biologists every Sunday to clear debris from the beach and mangrove forests. In 2023 alone, these community-driven efforts successfully removed nearly 12,000 kilograms of waste, highlighting SHR’s commitment to preserving marine and coastal environments.

At SAii Koh Samui Choengmon, nestled in Hanuman Bay, weekly beach and road cleaning sessions are complemented by organic refreshments for participants, fostering a sense of community and environmental responsibility among guests.

Leading the Charge in the Indian Ocean

Across the Indian Ocean, CROSSROADS Maldives stands out as a fully plastic-free resort. In collaboration with the Maldives’ Ministry of Climate Change, Environment, and Energy, the resort maintains its pristine natural landscape while educating guests and local schoolchildren through eco-tourism classes. The Junior Marine Biologist programme offers an engaging look at the impact of plastic pollution on marine life, with rotating exhibitions at the Marine Discovery Centre showcasing the region’s coral diversity and underscoring the importance of conservation.

Commitment to Comprehensive Sustainability

SHR’s dedication to environmental stewardship extends beyond these flagship initiatives. “To remain at the forefront of environmental stewardship, all SHR hotels take concrete actions to protect our planet,” said Michael Marshall, CEO of S Hotels and Resorts. “This includes phasing out single-use plastics, embracing electric vehicles for transportation, installing solar panels and on-site water treatment systems, offering water-refilling corners, and eco-friendly bathroom amenities, and much more.”

By actively engaging guests in hands-on activities and experiences, SHR ensures that their commitment to sustainability is not just a corporate directive but a shared mission with their visitors. This July, SHR’s resorts offer guests the unique opportunity to contribute to a cleaner, more sustainable world through immersive and impactful eco-friendly experiences.
