Huawei Drives Digital & Green Thailand

In today’s society, the global economy is entering the 5.0 era, where humans are seamlessly integrating technology into every aspect of their daily lives. Digital technology is playing a crucial role in driving changes that have enhanced the well-being of people and society, while also making less impact on the environment. It is therefore becoming increasingly important for all of us to prepare for the arrival of the 5.0 era, which will bring about tremendous changes and greater opportunities for humanity. To ensure that nobody is left behind by this trend, organizations in both the private and public sectors came together in collaboration to discuss how to support business leaders in cultivating Human Capital, equipping them with qualifications that will contribute to business goals and sustainable development for Thailand.

Huawei, as a leading global provider of information and communications technology (ICT), infrastructure is steadfast in its commitment to lead the organization towards a just transition that leaves no one behind, by incorporating the concept of sustainability into its business strategy. Moreover, the company also aims to bring digital to every person, home, and organization for a fully connected, intelligent and low-carbon Thailand. Through collaborations with the UN Global Compact Network Thailand (UNGCNT), the company is working to empower people’s daily life and inspire smart innovations in organizations of all sizes and contributing to the country’s efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Dr. Chawapol Jariyawiroj, President of Huawei Technologies (Thailand) Co., Ltd., emphasized Huawei’s role in fostering a digitally inclusive transition on a global scale: “Huawei is strategically incorporating digital inclusion into our initiatives, ensuring alignment with sustainability guidelines, and actively fostering a digitally inclusive transition worldwide. Our commitment to using technology for positive social development is reflected in our sustainability strategies, including Digital Inclusion, Security and Trustworthiness, Environmental Protection, and a Healthy and Harmonious Ecosystem. We firmly believe that by leveraging digital technology and forming strategic partnerships, we can contribute to building a more inclusive and sustainable digital world.”

He also emphasized that in order to shape policies supporting digital inclusion, the company has collaborated with many government agencies and organizations at a global level, recognizing the importance of regulatory frameworks in bridging the digital divide. At the same time, in the rapidly evolving digital landscape, new technologies offer numerous benefits, yet it can have adverse consequences when misused by individuals with malicious intent. Therefore, Huawei places a strong emphasis on human capital development through training programs and educational initiatives, empowering individuals with the right skills and mindset that is needed for the digital era.

When asked about its commitment to digital inclusion, Dr. Chawapol said: “Technology serves as the bridge to elevate the well-being of individuals and sustainably drive Thailand forward. To this end, we’ve actively worked with global partners, including United Nations organizations, non-governmental organizations, scientific institutions, governments, operators, and corporate customers. As of now, we are proud to be working with more than 40 partners globally, implementing over 60 projects. TECH4ALL, Huawei’s long-term digital inclusion program, has achieved significant milestones with over 600 schools and 220,000 teachers, students, and unemployed young people now having access to the Internet and receiving training in digital skills. The project is also improving conservation efficacy in 46 protected areas globally, boosting efficiencies in natural resource management and biodiversity protection.”

Huawei’s technology makes a significant difference for numerous organizations and individuals across the country, ensuring that the benefits of technology reach even the most remote corners of the country. Through its initiatives, Huawei strives to empower communities, facilitate connectivity, and enhance the overall well-being of individuals in underserved areas. The TrackAI project, a collaborative effort between a Spanish startup and Huawei, was launched to address the needs of children with visual impairments. In this case, the device employs an eye tracker to monitor a child’s gaze and Huawei’s AI technology is utilized to determine if the child is experiencing any visual impairments. Since its inception three years ago, the project has successfully provided visual examinations for over 4,500 children across five countries.

Huawei’s commitment to digital inclusion is also evident in its Digital Bus project initiated in 2021 in Thailand. This project reinforces digital inclusiveness by providing free and tailored digital training to 10 rural provinces, 40 remote communities, and over 3,000 rural children, workers, and SMEs. Through this initiative, Huawei contributes to the development of digital skills and STEM education, fostering a more inclusive learning environment. In addition, Huawei joined forces with Thailand’s Office of The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) for the USO 2.0 project in acknowledgment of the digital divide prevalent in rural areas. Utilizing its AirPON solution, Huawei played a pivotal role in providing fiber-optic connectivity to reach 19,652 villages. This initiative not only bridged the digital gap but also enabled access to crucial services such as remote telemedicine, education, and e-commerce activities. It also underscores the company’s commitment to connecting and empowering even the most remote communities, fostering inclusivity and sustainable development.

“Huawei collaborates with governments and organizations globally to shape policies supporting digital inclusion, recognizing the importance of regulatory frameworks in bridging the digital divide. We place a strong emphasis on human capital development through training programs and educational initiatives, empowering individuals with the skills needed for the digital era. Additionally, the company remains committed in advancing its mission to “Grow in Thailand, Contribute to Thailand” and to “Lead Everyone Forward, Leave No One Behind”, with a dedicated focus on facilitating Thailand’s digital transition and adoption of green technologies.” Dr. Chawapol added.
