Vietjet Thailand Leads with Sustainable Aviation Fuel

Vietjet Thailand is proud to announce its pioneering step of the Fly Green mission by becoming the first low-cost airline in the region to pilot the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). This initiative is a significant milestone in the airline’s ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability.

Mr. Woranate Laprabang, Chief Executive Officer of Vietjet Thailand, and Mr. Disathat Panyarachun, Chief Executive Officer of PTT Oil & Retail Business Public Co., Ltd., signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to initiate the use of SAF across Vietjet Thailand flights, including both domestic and international routes, starting from July 2024.

“This initiative to use sustainable aviation fuel is a concrete operational plan of Vietjet Group, emphasizing our commitment to reducing environmental impacts in alignment with Thailand’s goal of net zero carbon dioxide emissions by 2050 and the goals of the International Civil Aviation Organization,” said Mr. Woranate Laprabang.

“The collaboration involves the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), produced from Used Cooking Oil (UCO), which can be blended with jet fuel without requiring engine modifications. This aligns with OR SDG strategy, particularly in the aspect of “G” or “GREEN,” aiming to create a clean society and healthy environment to effectively address OR’s 2030 goals. OR has consistently supported clean energy initiatives throughout the value chain. Furthermore, the joint effort of OR and Vietjet Thailand is set to transform the aviation industry by co-developing alternative energy sources and pioneering technologies for the future aircraft. By combining our expertise and resources, OR and Vietjet Thailand are poised to create a cleaner, greener future for aviation, setting a new standard for environmental responsibility and innovation in the industry.” Mr. Disathat Panyarachun added

Sustainable aviation fuel, despite being several times more expensive than conventional fuel, has the capability to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by up to 80% compared to traditional fuels. SAF is not only safe but can also be blended with regular fuel, ensuring seamless integration into current operations.

In addition, Vietjet Thailand continues its dedication to the ‘Fly Green Fund,’ the airline’s environmental project established in early 2021 with the ultimate goal of environmental sustainability and preservation. Over the past five years, the Fly Green Fund has raised awareness about reducing environmental impact. The project includes a wide range of community and environmental activities, encouraging active involvement from passengers and stakeholders across all sectors.
