British Council’s scholarships for Women in STEM continue to empower women to pursue higher education in the UK

The British Council continues to encourage women to pursue a master’s degree, and an early academic fellowship in the STEM field – science, technology, engineering, or mathematics programme at leading UK universities.

Through the British Council Women in STEM scholarships, over 100 women from countries in the Americas, South Asia, and East Asia, including Thailand will have the opportunity to pursue their studies in STEM subjects. Partnering with 21 universities across the UK, this scholarship scheme includes tuition fees, monthly stipend, travel costs, visa and health coverage fees. It is also open to women with dependants and contains provisions for scholars that might need a short pre-sessional English course to achieve the language level needed to undergo their studies. Eligible applicants in Thailand must apply directly to the following universities of their interest: Middlesex University, University of Strathclyde, Newcastle University, and Aston University. Application deadlines vary, depending on the UK institutions – but are between March and May 2023. Ms Helga Stellmacher, Director of the British Council in Thailand, said: “STEM-related fields and careers in STEM are in high demand as it is one of the key professions playing a pivotal part of generating much needed innovation in these ever-changing times. Many countries around the world are now paying more attention to equality gaps in education. Consequently, supporting girls’ and women’s empowerment to pursue a career in science as well as related industries, in particular, will help reduce the gender gap among STEM professionals. As the UK’s international organisation for cultural relations and educational opportunities, the British Council has continued to enhance educational equality for women through the Women in STEM scholarships, which is now in its third year running. These full scholarships provide opportunities for women to complete studies in STEM subjects in the UK”.

Ms Helga added: “The STEM scholarships for women not only help boost education equality, but they are also benefiting scholars to pursue their passions in STEM pathways, and at the same time, to assist them to overcome obstacles and limitations. The scholarship programme will enable talented women to take up a life-changing opportunities to expand their knowledge and harness the experience of studying in the UK, a country that has world-renowned higher education. Hopefully, those scholars will come back into society and succeed in STEM professional fields which will significantly boost the shortage of personnel in the STEM field that is in great demand today as well as providing influential role models for girls and women interested in these areas”.
