COVID-19: 30 new cases; most had contact with previous cases

The Spokesman for the government’s Center for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA), Dr. Taweesin Visanuyothin, says Thailand has recorded two more deaths and 30 new confirmed cases of coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) infection, as of Wednesday morning (Apr 15). Most of the newly reported cases had close contact with previous cases. Meanwhile, ninety-two Thai nationals will return from South Korea tonight.

Dr. Taweesin said Thailand now has an accumulated total of 2,643 confirmed cases in 68 provinces. The total number of recovered patients has increased to 1,497, while 1,103 others are being treated in hospitals. Most patients are between 30 and 39 years old. The death toll has increased from 41 to 43. One recent patient, who succumbed to COVID-19, was a 65-year-old female food vendor at Chiang Mai Walking Street in Chiang Mai province. She had previously suffered from diabetes, chronic kidney disease and high blood pressure. The woman had close contact with a person who tested positive for the virus and was living in the same household. Another patient was a 60-year-old man from Ayutthaya province. He recently attended a religious event in Indonesia.

Of the 30 new cases, 19 of them, or 66 percent, had close contact with previous cases. Phuket province still has the highest rate of active COVID-19 cases at 45.96 per 100,000 people, followed by Bangkok at 23.42 and Yala at 17.41. Patients infected from other people at home, was up by 23 percent.

A total of 92 Thais, who are stranded in South Korea, will return to Thailand at 10 p.m. today. Tomorrow, another group of 120 Thais will return from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and 70 from Maldives. This Friday, 35 Thais will return from Bangladesh. They will all undergo the precautionary quarantine process
