The Bank of Thailand estimates the number of foreign tourists to drop to 5.5 million in 2021 from 6.7 million last year. In 2022, the number is estimated to rise to 23 million.
Rathawat Kuvijitrsuwan, head of research at property consultancy CBRE Thailand, said that the coronavirus pandemic in Thailand caused a downturn in resort and hotel occupancy nationwide.
Mr. Rathawat also said that serviced apartments like vacation rentals were another sector affected by the COVID outbreak as supply was sufficient but the demand became lower.
The decrease in vacation rental bookings was due to fewer foreign expatriates. To survive, vacation rentals should shift to Thai nationals or foreign expatriates residing in Thailand as their new target markets for their promotions.
