Huawei Empowers Women in Digital Era: Launching ‘Girls in ICT’ Project for Thai Youth!

In today’s world, developing digital skills is crucial for fostering inclusive, sustainable, and equitable digital transformation, which plays a vital role in Thailand’s economic development. Embracing these skills paves the way towards a secure future and a robust economy. According to a report by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), Thailand boasts a high internet penetration rate among its young population. It found that 99% of the population between the ages of 15 and 24 are estimated to be connected to the internet. However, the percentage of the population with basic, intermediate, and advanced digital skills still have significant room for improvement. This is particularly crucial for promoting digital skills and ICT among women in the country, empowering them to explore new educational prospects and pursue more inclusive career opportunities.

International Girls in ICT Day 2023 draws attention to the critical need for more women in the ICT sector and follows the 2023 theme of “Digital Skills for Life!”. This year, Huawei Thailand, the world’s leading ICT company and digital transformation enabler, has joined ITU’s ‘Girls in ICT’ initiative and expressed its value proposition to drive digital inclusion and women’s empowerment in the digital era with a variety of trainings, seminars, and knowledge transfers. Thailand stands as a shining example of promoting gender equality in internet access with 84% of Thai women using the internet, which is significantly higher than other countries in Asia Pacific. Meanwhile, government agencies are actively advancing the promotion of internet access for women and youth throughout the country. This includes strategically investing in essential digital infrastructure to expand broadband internet networks, fostering a robust digital ecosystem, and empowering youth by giving them greater access to digital devices. Such initiatives aim to enable women and youths to harness the full potential of digital technology.

However, the number of women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) professions remains relatively low in Thailand. The study revealed that only 43% of women were engaged in these professions, although this is significantly higher than the global average. Nonetheless, we need to encourage more women to pursue their dream careers in STEM and ICT, as this will undoubtedly bolster Thailand’s digital economy in the near future. The diverse training sessions organized during this event will offer valuable opportunities and inspire young women by showcasing the numerous benefits of ICT technology and guiding them towards career advancement. Huawei firmly believes that fostering the pursuit of STEM careers among young people and women is essential for mitigating digital inequality and fostering a diverse and inclusive society. Moreover, this undertaking lays the foundation for cultivating skilled 21st-century digital citizens, contributing to the country’s progress and prosperity.

Mr. Woragarn Likhitdechasakdi, CTO of Huawei Thailand Carrier Business Group, addressed the issue of female representation in the Thai ICT industry: “Huawei stands prepared to propel Thailand into an era of complete connectivity and intelligent advancements. As part of this year’s Girls in ICT Day event, Huawei has orchestrated a diverse array of ICT training courses encompassing various subjects such as 5G network development and cloud development. This initiative also includes visits to innovation centers and exhibitions, fostering digital transformation and promoting the cultivation of digital skills among young individuals and women.”

“Huawei actively engages with various agencies, including the National Broadcasting and Telecommunication Commission, the Office of The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC), the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society, and the ITU’s Asia and Pacific Regional Office. This collaboration involves organizing events and training programs aimed at igniting the interest of young women in pursuing STEM studies, while solidifying Huawei’s role as a vital partner in supporting these new initiatives. Such efforts aim to enhance their potential and cultivate ICT skills among youth nationwide.”

Promoting digital knowledge stands as a crucial catalyst for Thailand’s attainment of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). To accomplish this, a collaborative and coordinated endeavor among diverse stakeholders, including the government, private sector, academia, and civil society, is crucial. Together, they must join forces to support one another and actively work towards advancing this vital agenda. Huawei remains steadfast in its commitment to inspire young individuals and women, helping them recognize the advantages of ICT technology and its potential in shaping their future careers. Through initiatives like these, women can further contribute to diversity and play a pivotal role in fostering sustainable economic development. Huawei expects that its comprehensive digital training initiatives and efforts to cultivate ICT professionals will effectively bridge the gap in ICT skills and knowledge while fostering equality in the digital era. By empowering the youth and women of Thailand, Huawei aims to strengthen their ICT potential, aligning with their mission to “Grow in Thailand, Contribute to Thailand.” Through this, Huawei aims to contribute to Thailand’s future vision of becoming a prominent digital hub in ASEAN.
