Kiti Panit General Store opens in 130-year-old mansion in Chiang Mai

Kiti Panit General Store opened its doors in Chiang Mai today. Serving Northern Thai food in one of Chiang Mai’s most storied buildings, the restaurant is a tribute to the rich culture and culinary heritage of the north.

Located on Tapae Road within walking distance from the city walls and Chiang Mai’s famous Night Market, Kiti Panit General Store is housed in a stunning teak tree mansion dating back to 1880. The house was Chiang Mai’s first general store and is still owned by the 5th generation of descendants from the Chinese immigrants who founded the store.

Having been uninhabited for the past 70 years, the building has undergone extensive renovations using local artists and craftsmen to restore and bring to life the original woodwork including ceilings, flooring, staircase and panels.

The first floor consists of a main dining room and a large courtyard, a rare sight in central Chiang Mai. The second floor features a grand reception hall with 7-metre high teak-tree ceilings. All the original furniture make up the décor.

The menu focuses on traditional northern Thai food including well known favourites such as Khao Soy, Sai Oua Nam Prik Noom, as well as lesser known northern dishes such as Wild Boar Curry and Fermented Tea Leaf Salad.

The drinks section features a selection of home-made sodas using Northern Thailand’s rich flora and fauna, as well as a wine list.
