Thai Culinary City: A Gastronomic Tour to Remember!

Mr. Vincent Thierry, Michelin-starred restaurant chef from lebua at State TowerThe Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has embarked on an ambitious initiative, the “Amazing Thailand Culinary City” project, to position Thailand as a global gastronomy tourism powerhouse. By combining innovation, immersive experiences, and the principles of the Thai government’s Bio-Circular-Green Economy Model, this project seeks to propel Thailand’s culinary scene to unprecedented heights.

Led by Mr Chattan Kunjara Na Ayudhya, TAT Deputy Governor for Marketing Communications, the Amazing Thailand Culinary City project embraces the core components of the Bio-Circular-Green Economy Model: Agriculture, Gastronomy, Food Safety, Experience, and Creative Entrepreneurship. With a focus on stimulating a circular economy and fostering sustainable economic, social, and environmental growth, this initiative sets the stage for a prosperous future.

A vital aspect of the Amazing Thailand Culinary City project is its comprehensive approach, catering to business-to-business (B2B) and business-to-consumer (B2C) segments. By facilitating connections among food tourism entrepreneurs and showcasing the rich diversity of Thai cuisine across the nation, this project aims to drive collaboration and increase awareness of regional culinary treasures.

The “Amazing Thailand Culinary City” event, a highlight of the project’s B2B strategy, will be hosted with the prestigious Thailand Travel Mart Plus (TTM+) 2023, the country’s premier B2B travel industry show. From May 31 to June 2 at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre in Bangkok, this three-day event will gather 30 gastronomy tourism sellers representing City Dining Experience, Farm to Table, and Culinary Cooking Activity categories.

Beyond productive B2B meetings, attendees can indulge in delectable dishes from participating restaurants, try their hand at crafting traditional Thai desserts, and experience the rejuvenating benefits of a traditional Thai massage. An exhibition showcasing internationally acclaimed Thai dishes, including the iconic Tom Yam Kung, Phat Thai, and Green Curry, as well as lesser-known hidden gems from across the country, will further elevate the event’s allure.

A panel discussion featuring renowned international food blogger Mark Wiens, with over 10 million YouTube followers, and Chef Thitid ‘Ton’ Tassanakajohn, whose restaurant Le Du recently claimed the top spot in Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants 2023 list, will explore the intersection of food and tourism economy, the potential for gastronomy tourism expansion, and emerging trends.

Complementing the B2B activities, the Amazing Thailand Culinary City project’s B2C strategy unfolds through the “4 Locations: 4 Styles” culinary events. Spanning May and June, these events will showcase Thailand’s four regions’ unique flavours and culinary traditions. Chiang Mai (Northern region) will take the spotlight from May 19 to 21, followed by Khon Kaen (Northeastern region) from June 9 to 11, Phuket (Southern region) from June 16 to 18, and Chanthaburi (Eastern region) from June 23 to 25, 2023.

Each of these four events will gather regional food entrepreneurs, local operators, and other business owners, offering a range of activities such as workshops on crafting local snacks, captivating cooking shows, exhibitions highlighting the potential and distinctiveness of Thai cuisine, and of course, mouthwatering local delicacies to savour.

During the official launch of the Amazing Thailand Culinary City project, TAT hosted a riveting panel discussion led by Mr Vincent Thierry, the esteemed Michelin-starred chef from lebua at State Tower, and Ms Wisa Wangsupachart, a popular food blogger whose TikTok channel bon_appetitbkk boasts over 1.5 million followers.
