Courtyard by Marriott®, part of Marriott Bonvoy’s portfolio of over 30 extraordinary hotel brands, today announced the opening of Courtyard by Marriott Fukui, the seventh Courtyard by Marriott in Japan and first Marriott International hotel in Fukui, central Japan. Located in the heart of the city, in a destination surrounded by idyllic cedar forests and breathtaking coastal cliffs overlooking the Sea of Japan, the 252-room Courtyard by Marriott Fukui is part of the Fukui-densha Street Redevelopment project, a multi-use commercial and residential complex.
With a modern design that honors the beautiful traditional aesthetics and crafts of the prefecture, the hotel is ready to welcome international and local guests to Fukui city. Located approximately 45 kilometers from Komatsu Airport, Courtyard by Marriott Fukui is easily accessible from other regional and international destinations. The upcoming Shinkansen or bullet train extension will comfortably whisk visitors from Tokyo, a one-hour flight away, to Tsuruga Station in Fukui prefecture in three hours, enabling international visitors to explore the many wonders of Fukui and its surroundings.

Fukui, which is also easily accessible from Osaka and Kyoto, is famous for its fresh seafood, rugged mountainous landscapes, high coastal cliffs and historic Zen Buddhist temples and shrines. The city is home to the 13th century Eiheiji Temple complex, an active monastery which is one of the major temples of Zen Buddhism in Japan. Two other must-visit attractions in Fukui are the 17th-century Maruoka Castle, one of only 12 feudal-era castles left intact in Japan, as well as the stunning 8th-century Heisenji Hakusan Shrine, nestled in a serene mossy forest. The city also welcomes visitors to a world-famous dinosaur excavation site and educational Dinosaur Museum nearby, which features more than 40 dinosaur skeletons and life-size animatronic dinosaurs. Fukui prefecture is known for its famous Echizen ware, a type of ancient Japanese pottery still produced in kilns built around the 12th century.
The architectural design of Courtyard by Marriott Fukui is inspired by the concept of “kotan”, or elegant simplicity that carries depth of meaning. The building’s exteriors are inspired by traditional “habutae” weaving, which features one horizontal and two vertical strands. The clean lines of the interiors feature warm textures of wood and stone, and the soft furnishings throughout the hotel’s 252 guest rooms and suites invite guests to rest and relax with natural color palettes and ambient lighting in versatile spaces that reflect a modern sophisticated style. All guest rooms feature smart TVs, spacious bathrooms, comfortable bedding and flexible work spaces.
The hotel features two distinct dining venues and a lobby lounge and bar. Substance, the hotel’s all-day restaurant offers menus that highlight the best of local and international ingredients. An open kitchen provides a live dining experience that stimulates all five senses. The bright interior lit by natural light through the restaurant’s large windows is an inviting space to spend special time with family or friends. Blending traditional Japanese elements with a modern atmosphere, Fukui, the hotel’s Japanese cuisine restaurant, offers elegant, seasonal dishes that showcase fresh ingredients locally sourced in Fukui Prefecture. The interior harmonizes a calm ambiance and refined design, creating a comfortable space to experience the local culinary charm. The Lounge & Bar is an inviting space where guests can enjoy coffee, tea, cocktails and light snacks.
