Walk along the main Yaowarat Road or Chinatown past the usual street-side highlights, and you will find a goldsmith shop with bright neon lights on the corner of Yaowarat and Mangkon streets. Within these storied walls is a new cookshop by the star-studded Chef David Thompson (of Nahm and Aksorn culinary powerhouses).
This is Chop Chop Cookshop. Upon entering, the table design and arrangement remind you of a diner elevated with bright neons. The semi-open kitchen is neat and adjacent to the stairways up to their bar. Head up, we did, for photos and pre-dinner drinks.
Signature cocktails exceeded expectations, and the service team is supremely welcoming. Try the Goldsmith, a cocktail named after the building and the bar.
What is a Cookshop?
Cookshops were the first fully-fledged restaurants in the city, and as they flourished, they spread across the city and into the affections of the Thais. They had their heyday from the 1930s to the 1970s, and every Bangkok family has fond memories of these places. They are an integral, if improbable, part of Bangkok’s culinary heritage.
Dinner Anecdotes
The milk bread was served old-school style, and the starters were varied. Expect innovative twists on classic cookshop repertoire and plated for sharing.
For mains, we sampled Chef David’s take on a Malay curry served with sausages from Sloanes, a unique prawn dish, some lovely & crunchy greens and more. The sugar snap peas ticked all the boxes. The stir-fried beef was visually simple but delivered mighty flavours. Each dish has a tale, and the team will gladly enlighten you. Indeed, Chop Chop’s cooking has provenance, a blend of Chinese, Thai and Western cuisines. Come with family or in a group to try more dishes.
