Chiang Khan Shines: A Beacon of Sustainability in ASEAN

Loei - Chiang Khan.In an era where sustainability has become the clarion call for destinations worldwide, Chiang Khan, a picturesque town nestled along the banks of the Khong River in Northeastern Thailand, has emerged as a vanguard of eco-conscious travel. This tranquil locale has been honoured with the Silver Green Destinations Award, a testament to its unwavering commitment to sustainability. It marks a historic milestone as the first ASEAN destination to receive such prestigious recognition.

The accolade was bestowed upon Chiang Khan at the ITB Berlin 2024, the world’s leading travel trade show, highlighting the town’s exceptional dedication to preserving its natural and cultural heritage. According to Gp. Capt. Athikun Kongmee, Director-General of the Designated Areas for Sustainable Tourism Administration (DASTA), this recognition serves as “a tribute to the admirable efforts of various parties who have collaborated tirelessly to meet the rigorous standards set by the Green Destinations Standard.”

Chiang Khan’s journey to sustainability began in earnest in 2019, with the town striving to become a model for sustainable tourism development. This collective effort involved the support and cooperation of over 30 entities spanning the public and private sectors and, crucially, the local communities. These concerted efforts aligned with the Global Sustainable Tourism Criteria (GSTC), ensuring that Chiang Khan not only adhered to but excelled in meeting 84 comprehensive criteria for sustainable tourism.

The Silver Green Destinations Award signifies Chiang Khan’s progression in the certification process, showcasing its additional compliance levels achieved through dedicated stewardship. With the award’s validity spanning two years, Chiang Khan is poised to continue its leadership role in sustainable tourism.

Chiang Khan’s recognition as the first ASEAN destination to win this award places it among a select group of 122 Green Destinations worldwide. It joins the ranks of five other destinations across Japan, Taiwan, and Thailand, underscoring the growing emphasis on sustainable practices in Asia. Furthermore, this achievement paves the way for other Thai destinations to pursue Green Destinations Certification, including Mueang Kao Sukhothai, Nan Old City, Ko Mak, and Khlong Thom, heralding a new era of environmental stewardship within the region.

Chiang Khan’s success is a beacon of inspiration, demonstrating that sustainability and tourism coexist harmoniously. As more destinations follow in its footsteps, the dream of a greener, more sustainable world becomes more tangible.
