Fifth Art Rotation Series to feature unique artist duo at 137 Pillars Suites & Residences Bangkok

To commemorate the fifth edition of the rotating art showcase, luxury boutique hotel 137 Pillars Suites & Residences Bangkok offers art lovers an extraordinary showcase of the works of two artists, who are also very good friends.

The award-winning duo, Prasert Yodkaew and Suttikiet Pumpoung, are well-known in the Thai art community for their artistic interpretations of traditional Thai murals and beliefs, which will also be the focus of their collections in Art Rotation Series Vol. 5: Prasert Yodkaew & Suttikiet Pumpoung, which opens on 25 July 2019.

Born in 1987, Prasert Yodkaew, received extensive training in traditional Thai art, eventually receiving a B.F.A. from Silapakorn University in Bangkok. But in recent years he has shifted towards installation and performance art as he explores the three-dimensional, constantly shifting experience of being and believing. He also reinterprets traditional Thai beliefs by mixing them with readymade objects to create a metaphor that reflects not just on society but the world we live in.

ā€œI get bored very easily,ā€ he says. ā€œWhen I start working, I have no idea how itā€™s going to end. Unlike my friends who have a definite sketch, I keep changing. I have fun dealing with the challenges that constantly come up.ā€ This process mirrors his philosophical stance of human natureā€™s endless grappling with obstacles, contradictions and oppositions. A struggle which creates systems of belief, ideas, or truths in order to navigate the chaos of existence.ā€

Over the years Prasert has exhibited his unique art in solo exhibitions including ā€œSciencefaithā€ at the Projectpace Gallery Luang Prabang; and ā€œHow To Get Back To Heavenā€ at Tang Contemporary Art Beijing. His group showcases include the ā€œContemporary Art Thai Youth Exhibition at the Embassy of Thailand, Los Angeles; Thailand Encounters, Art Sanya, Hainan, China; 1 Project at Art Stage Singapore 2017; and more recently at Ouroboros, Bridge Gallery, Bangkok.

He has also been awarded the Outstanding Award of the 17th Toshiba ā€œBring Good Things To Lifeā€ Art Competition, and the Third Excellent Prize Bua Luang Painting Competition organised by Bangkok Bank.

His friend, Suttikiet Pumpoung was born in 1989 and went on to receive a Bachelorā€™s Degree of Fine Arts. from Rajamangala University of Technology Lanna. He then acquired a Masterā€™s Degree in Painting, Sculpture and Graphic Arts from Silapakorn University Bangkok. In his art he reinterprets Thai murals by updating them with colours and his own unique markings.

ā€œPaintings,ā€ says Suttikiet, ā€œwhich have always been an important historical tool to chronicle human civilisations can relay societal circumstances to later generations. Such what happened to Thai society in the past decade, when it encountered an internal conflict that led to what could be called ā€˜a war on intellectionā€™. Originating from political and administrative factions, this situation caused a general atmosphere of mistrust and suspicion. After living through this tribulation, I portray what I personally observed and felt through this experience, creating a record of a living contemporary situation from my point of view.ā€

Suttikietā€™s solo showings include ā€œStoryā€ at TITA Gallery, Chiang Mai, and ā€œRunning Up That Hillā€ at the 1 Projects Gallery Bangkok. He has also exhibited as part of a group Toshima Ecomusee Town, Tokyo and the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum.

The ā€œArt Rotation Series Vol. 5: Prasert Yodkaew & Suttikiet Pumpoungā€ will be on display at the Baan Borneo Club, and Louieā€™s Tiffin Grill at 137 Pillars Suites & Residences Bangkok from 25 July to 5 September 2019 and the exhibition is open to the public from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
