Meliá Hotels Unveils Historic Lao Palace as First Southeast Asian Flagship

Le BistrotIn an unprecedented move, Meliá Hotels International has announced its first foray into Laos, setting a new milestone with the introduction of the Grand Luang Prabang—a historical jewel nestled in the heart of Southeast Asia. This strategic expansion underscores Meliá’s vision to weave unique cultural narratives into its luxurious hospitality offerings, now spanning seven nations across Asia.

The Grand Luang Prabang, previously the esteemed residence of a Lao prince, is poised to undergo a transformative 12-month rebranding initiative. This rebrand will enhance the property’s allure and mark it as the inaugural member of the prestigious Melia Collection in Southeast Asia. Launched in 2022, the Melia Collection assembles the most distinctive properties under the Meliá banner, celebrated for their unique character and storied pasts.

Situated on an idyllic riverside locale, the hotel sprawls across a six-hectare bluff overlooking the Mekong River, offering panoramic views encompassing the mystic mountains and tranquil waters. This site, known historically as Xiengkeo Palace, combines French colonial architecture with authentic Laotian influences—a testament to its regal lineage and the cultural amalgamation during Prince Petcharath’s era, who was both a resident and Prime Minister of Laos during World War II.

The Grand Luang Prabang features 75 keys spread over eight buildings, including the original 1920-built palace and several annexes. The property’s design reflects its royal heritage, with balconies offering vistas of manicured gardens and lotus ponds. The interiors are adorned with traditional wooden furnishings and timeless decor. The expansive grounds also house a large swimming pool within lush gardens, enhancing the serene and majestic setting.

Gabriel Escarrer, Chairman and CEO of Meliá Hotels International, expressed enthusiasm about the new venture, stating, “For the Meliá family, beginning our journey in Laos with this extraordinary hotel is a privilege. We anticipate destinations like Luang Prabang will draw modern travelers seeking unique experiences. This hotel’s deep-rooted sense of place will undoubtedly enrich our guests’ connection to this historic destination.”

Luang Prabang, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is revered for its profound historical and cultural significance, dotted with ancient temples and monasteries. Managing Director Asia Pacific at Meliá Hotels International, Ignacio Martin, highlighted the city’s charm: “Luang Prabang is a hidden gem in Asia, steeped in rich history and culture. We aim to immerse our guests in the essence of this beautiful destination through a hotel that embodies its spirit.”

As Meliá continues to expand its presence in Asia—a region that became a pivotal market since the opening of Meliá Bali in the 1980s—the addition of the Grand Luang Prabang enriches a portfolio now boasting 50 properties across Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Thailand, Myanmar, China, and Laos. This expansion not only cements Meliá’s commitment to delivering exceptional hospitality but also showcases their dedication to integrating their locations’ cultural and historical essence into their travel experiences.
