Ravi Chandran: A Trailblazer’s Impact Beyond Retirement

Ravi ChandranRetirement for many signifies a slowdown, a retreat into a life of leisure. Not so for Ravi Chandran, the ex-chief executive of Laguna Phuket and a 25-year stalwart of Banyan Tree Holdings. Since hanging up his corporate hat, Chandran has emerged as a pivotal figure in socially impactful projects across Thailand, blending his business acumen with a profound commitment to societal welfare.

This evolution isn’t unexpected for those familiar with Chandran’s lineage: his father, Cpt. Chandran, MBE OBE, was a fervent advocate for social housing. Carrying this legacy forward, Ravi Chandran now plays a crucial role in the Chandran Foundation, led by his sister Chitra. The foundation primarily focuses on youth welfare, encompassing education, nutrition, and family support. Chandran’s engagement as a Special Project Manager for the last 15 months is a testament to his enduring commitment to social responsibility.

Chandran’s decision to step down from Banyan Tree Holdings was a move towards a different kind of fulfilment. He reflects fondly on his time there, particularly the company’s significant role in the Phuket Sandbox initiative, which helped rejuvenate Thailand’s tourism sector post-Covid. However, a desire for change and the need to slow down post-pandemic were critical factors in his transition.

Post-retirement, Chandran initially embraced a quieter life, indulging in travel and wellness pursuits in his home of Phuket. However, this phase was short-lived. Chandran’s reputation and network soon led him to Urasaya Beachfront Residences, an eco-sensitive project in Nakhon Si Thammarat province. This venture exemplifies Chandran’s vision for sustainable tourism – a blend of luxury and environmental consciousness in undiscovered Thai locales.

Back in Phuket, Chandran’s expertise is now shaping the future of Amora Hotels & Resorts. Under his guidance, the family-run hotel group is transitioning into a modern hospitality company. Chandran’s involvement is a strategic move towards expansion, starting with the grand opening of Amora Beach Resort Phuket, a project representing a significant investment.

Chandran’s influence extends into the realm of real estate as well. He advises on the Gardens of Eden project, a unique destination-wellness concept at Bangtao Beach. Prioritizing sustainability, the project dedicates 70% of its area to green space, setting new standards for development on the island.

As Chandran looks to the future, his path is selective engagement in projects that promise positive change. His journey is a remarkable story of a corporate leader transitioning into a role transcending traditional business boundaries. It’s a narrative that inspires and sets a benchmark for how retired professionals can continue to impact the world positively.

Chandran’s story is more than a tale of retirement. It’s about reinvention, impact, and the relentless pursuit of making a difference. As he continues to shape the future of Thailand’s social and business landscapes, his legacy serves as a beacon for others seeking purpose beyond their professional careers.
