Tetra Pak (Thailand), the world’s leading food processing and packaging solutions company, completed the installation of 3,076 roof-mounted solar panels in its factory in Rayong. The panels, installed by BayWa r.e. over four of the factory rooftops will provide 1,350 MWh of renewable electricity every year.
Apart from installing solar panels in its factory in Rayong, the company has engaged in other initiatives which increase the use of renewable electricity, including the purchase of International Renewable Energy Certificates (I-RECs). “Tetra Pak is the first company in Thailand to source Gold-Standard I-RECs. Now our Rayong factory is generating an additional 1MW renewable electricity from solar panels” said Bert Jan Post, Tetra Pak Thailand Managing Director.” The solar panels will save over 850 tons of carbon dioxide per annum.”
These projects contribute to achieving Tetra Pak’s ambitions both on reducing emissions and carbon footprint. The company already obtains over half of its global electricity supply from renewable sources, putting Tetra Pak firmly on course to meet its commitment of using only renewable electricity across all global operations by 2030. This commitment has been made by Tetra Pak within the RE100 initiative. RE100 currently unites 194 leading companies worldwide that are determined to go 100% to renewable power.
“Generating renewable electricity in our own operations is a major commitment in our journey to reduce carbon emissions and so help tackle climate change,” said Mario Abreu, Tetra Pak Vice President Sustainability. “Through the installation of our own on-site solar power panels and the purchase of renewable energy certificates (iRECs) for the electricity needs we can’t fulfil due to physical limitations, Tetra Pak is investing in the expansion of renewable electricity generation.”
