Tetra Pak Launches “The Green Shelter Project for Friends in Need (of “Pa”) Volunteers Foundation”

Tetra Pak, a world-leading processing and packaging solutions company, signed a memorandum of understanding to launch “The Green Shelter project for Friends in Need (of “Pa”) Volunteers Foundation”.

The Green Shelter continues the success of the Green Roof Project in encouraging beverage carton collection and recycling to create new construction materials that help build “homes” for the victims of natural disasters.

This collaborative campaign originated with the key founding partners: Friends in Need (of “Pa”) Volunteers Foundation, Thai Red Cross Society, BJC Big C, 360 Degree Entertainment (TV 360 news), and Department of Environmental Quality Promotion under Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment. New partners Central Pattana Public Company Limited and Bangchak Corporation Public Company Limited have joined the project to support the expansion of drop-off points for used beverage cartons, which will increase access to the victims through collaboration with the Relief and Community Health Bureau, Thai Red Cross Society. Moreover, BEC World Public Company Limited (Channel 3) has also participated in the communication and public relations for the project to build public awareness, support, and participation across the country.

Over the past 12 years, the Green Roof Project has collected more than 2,500 tons of used beverage cartons and recycled them into 68,000 roofing sheets, which were donated to the communities affected by natural disasters. The Green Shelter project for Friends in Need (of “Pa”) Volunteers Foundation will build on this success and leverage the potential for cooperation to create new products out of used beverage cartons, expand the collection network to obtain more used beverage cartons, and distribute more recycled products to aid people in the community. Used beverage cartons collected by volunteers across the country will be recycled into new construction materials apart from roofing sheets such as eco-wood, eco-bricks, door frames, and more to build “homes” for those in need.

Mr. Dhitiwat Wongwannakul, Committee and General Manager of Friends in Need (of “Pa”) Volunteers Foundation, Thai Red Cross Society said: “Our mission is to help victims in various parts of the country.  Collaborating with the private sector helps us support this important mission even more effectively. The Green Roof Project has previously helped many households suffering from natural disasters or those in need in various areas throughout Thailand.  Additional help in the form of the roof sheets and other construction materials from the Green Shelter Project will give us the potential to help our Thai people get through difficult times. The Foundation is delighted to continue this commitment with Tetra Pak and to see our partnership grow and expand to include new partners. This reaffirms our collaborative efforts in uniting the society on the mission to collect used beverage cartons for recycling.”

Tetra Pak sustainability strategy is founded on our commitment to a low-carbon circular economy. A circular economy depends on sustainable recycling value chains, which ensure cartons are collected, sorted, and recycled in practice and at scale. In Thailand, we initiated projects to promote the collection and recycling of used beverage cartons across the nation.

“We recognize that the success of these initiatives depends on the commitment of organisations within the value chain. For the Green Shelter project, we are thankful to all of our corporate partners for joining us this time and we look forward to receiving positive feedback from all sectors, particularly the group of carton collection volunteers from across the country, who are the driving force of the initiative,” said Ms. Ratanasiri Tilokskulchai, Managing Director of Tetra Pak (Thailand) Limited. “This project became possible not only because of the founding partners’ collaboration, but also due to the support from recycling companies – such as Fiber Pattana Company Limited, Eco-Friendly Thai Company Limited, Recycoex Company Limited, Advanced Mat Company Limited, and M.B.J. Enterprise Company Limited. Together we were able to recycle used beverage cartons into a variety of quality construction materials that can actually be used for building new homes to benefit both our planet and our community.”

The Green Shelter project for Friends in Need (of “Pa”) Volunteers Foundation will run from September 1, 2022 to August 31, 2025, with a total of 14 major partners and endorsers. Individuals interested in donating used beverage cartons to the project can do so at ‘drop-off’ stations at all Big C Super Centers nationwide and 10 of Mini Big C Supermarket in Bangchak gas station in Bangkok, as well as Central Department Stores and affiliated office buildings across the country will begin piloting at 18 locations in Bangkok and surrounding provinces.
