Ian Di TullioIn a stunning revelation set to redefine the global hospitality landscape, Minor Hotels has announced an ambitious strategy to launch more than 200 new properties worldwide within the next three years. This monumental growth plan, unveiled by the Bangkok-based hotel giant, aims to expand its global portfolio by nearly 40% from its existing count of 540 establishments.

Dillip Rajakarier, Group CEO of Minor International and CEO of Minor Hotels, reflected on the company’s recent triumphs and future aspirations, stating, “2023 has been a record year and the figures, both financial and regarding the group’s expansion, confirm this. Looking ahead, we intend to increase this pace of openings, expanding our brands within our existing areas of operation and growing our global footprint into new regions where we are not yet present.”

The group’s strategy is about quantity, quality, and diversity. The expansion includes adding over 30,000 rooms, significantly enhancing its current inventory of nearly 80,000. With a sharp focus on its ‘asset right’ strategy, Minor Hotels plans to balance ownership and leasing, which currently account for 70% of its portfolio, with a more aggressive blend of management and franchise agreements. The group targets over 150 new management agreements, shifting the operating model mix from 19% in 2023 to an impressive 38% by 2026.

Ian Di Tullio, Chief Commercial Officer of Minor Hotels, elaborated on the strategic vision, emphasizing the importance of an ‘asset-right’ approach and a diversified contract mix. “While we will always retain direct ownership of key flagship assets, embracing modern trends we’re shifting towards an increased focus on management and also franchised contracts. This strategic move is set to organically expand our global footprint while retaining our strict owner-driven mindset across all management categories.”

In terms of geographical distribution, the expansion is as diverse as it is extensive. Half of the new openings are planned in Asia, marking a significant increase in the region’s share of global room inventory from 12% to 23% by 2026. Europe, the Middle East, Australia & New Zealand, the Americas, and Africa are also on the agenda, demonstrating Minor Hotels’ commitment to creating a balanced global presence.

The growth is anchored in the strength of Minor Hotels’ brands, including Anantara, Avani, Oaks, Tivoli, and NH Hotels. Avani is expected to more than double its count, nearing 100 properties. Additionally, Minor Hotels plans to introduce new brands in 2024 and 2025, addressing unmet consumer demands and offering tailored options to hotel owners.

The expansion includes notable openings like Anantara Palais Hansen Vienna Hotel and Anantara Jaipur Resort, marking Anantara’s entry into India. Avani Hotels & Resorts will introduce Frankfurt, Amsterdam, the Seychelles, and China properties. NH Collection Hotels & Resorts celebrates its 10th anniversary with new openings in Thailand, Qatar, Finland, and Portugal. Tivoli Hotels & Resorts and nhow Hotels are also expanding, with nhow debuting in Peru with nhow Lima and adding a property in Italy with nhow Rome.

Moreover, the Elewana Collection, known for boutique lodges in Kenya and Tanzania, is launching upscale Safari lodges under the Explorer by Elewana brand, with the Serengeti Explorer set to open in March.

Minor Hotels is expanding its hotel brands and venturing into new experience categories. The 12-key Anantara Kafue River Zambia Tented Camp is poised to offer an unprecedented luxury experience, while The Vietage by Anantara in Vietnam is expanding its luxury rail experience with a new route.

This aggressive expansion marks a significant milestone in Minor Hotels’ journey, reflecting their commitment to innovation and strategic growth in the ever-evolving global hospitality landscape. As they extend their footprint across continents, Minor Hotels is poised to redefine luxury and accessibility in the hospitality industry, promising a future where travel and luxury are more interconnected than ever.
