ONYX Hospitality’s New ESG Framework Boosts Asian Sustainability

Amari Raaya Maldives_Ocean Pool Villa _ Pool ViewThailand-based ONYX Hospitality Group has unveiled a new framework to bolster its corporate social responsibility and sustainability efforts. The leading Asian hospitality provider has committed to aligning its environmental, social, and governance initiatives with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs).OR ONYX

The new framework has four pillars linked to the company’s name: Opportunity, Nature, Youth, and Collaboration. Under these pillars, ONYX Hospitality Group will identify and support underprivileged individuals and organizations, promote environmental awareness, inspire future generations of hoteliers, and establish long-term allies and associations to meet ESG goals.

One of the key initiatives under the new framework is an exclusive partnership with the Environmental and Social Foundation (ESF) and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). The project aims to roll out environmental education to local school students through a mobile interactive exhibition in eight destinations throughout Thailand over a 10-month period. Each location will aim to reach 250 students over a three-day period, covering four key themes: Climate Change, Endangered Species, Waste Management, and Sustainable Food Systems.

The CEO of ONYX Hospitality Group, Mr Yuthachai Charanchitta, commented that the new framework was essential to meet the needs of guests looking to reduce their travel footprint’s impact. “We recognize the importance of this to meet the needs of our guests whilst also ensuring future generations can enjoy the same travel privileges. Small changes can make a big difference, so being ‘sustainably conscious’ is now a core message across all our properties,” he said.

The company has implemented regular monitoring, motion sensors in rooms, and in-room measures to reduce water use as part of ONYX Hospitality Group’s efforts to conserve water and energy across its properties. The company has also introduced biodegradable bathroom amenities and digitalization to reduce paper product usage.

The group has reinforced its initiative to hire and develop local talent, including partnering with local universities to engage, develop and retain young talent entering the workforce. ONYX Hospitality Group is working with Chiang Mai Rajabhat University and Mae Fah Luang University in Chiang Rai to create a research centre for hospitality excellence and offer unprecedented opportunities to students.

Collaboration is a crucial aspect of the new framework, with the company forming partnerships with suppliers and collaborating with corporate clients to serve communities and the environment. ONYX Hospitality Group is already guiding its hotels to use local produce and support local businesses wherever possible. The company has also partnered with Doi Chaang Coffee, a Thailand-based coffee producer, and introduced EV charging for cars at some of its properties in Thailand.

With its new ESG framework, ONYX Hospitality Group reinforces its commitment to sustainability and social responsibility, demonstrating that small changes can make a big difference in achieving a sustainable future for the hospitality industry.
